Log Horizon (ログ・ホライズン Rogu Horaizun) is a Japanese novel series written by Mamare Touno. It was initially posted on the user-generated content site Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2010 and subsequently published by Enterbrain since March 2011. The series follows the strategist, Shiroe, and the other players of the long-lived MMORPGElder Tale after they find themselves whisked away into the game world following a game update. The novel has received four manga adaptations, with one based on the main story and the other three revolving around characters in the series. An anime adaptation began airing on NHK Educational TV
Plot
By its eleventh expansion pack, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) Elder Tale (エルダー・テイル Erudā Teiru) has become a global success, with a user base of over millions of players. However, during the release of its twelfth expansion pack: Novasphere Pioneers (ノウアスフィアの開墾 Nōasufia no Kaikon, alt.Homesteading the Noosphere), thirty thousand Japanese gamers who are all logged on at the time of the update, suddenly find themselves transported into the virtual game world and donning their in-game avatars. In the midst of the event, a socially awkward gamer named Shiroe, along with his friends, Naotsugu and Akatsuki, decide to team up so that they may face this world, which unfortunately has now become their reality, along with the challenges and obstacles ahead of them.
CHARACTER
Shiroe

Shiroe (シロエ) is the main protagonist of the series Log Horizon.  A veteran player of the online game Elder Tale, he was formerly the strategist of the Debauchery Tea Party and is the current Guild Master of Log Horizon.  In the real world, he is a 23-year old engineering graduate student named Kei Shirogane (城鐘恵).

Appearance
Shiroe is taller by several centimeters in Elder Tale than he is in real life, and his figure is slightly slimmer. When he first regains consciousness in the game, he notices that his hands are more slender but also seemingly more skillful.

Facial Features

Shiroe wears glasses and is described by Naotsugu as having eyes that are "sanpaku," a term that means that the iris is small and doesn't completely cover the vertical axis of the eye. He has a habit of pushing up his glasses when he's thinking or is about to take action.

Personality

Shiroe is a graduate student majoring in engineering when he is trapped in the game Elder Tale. Naturally a cautious and thoughtful introvert, he has played the game since middle school and is a veteran with a near-encyclopaedic knowledge of the game, which is known for its depth and complexity.
Although Shiroe is socially awkward and tends to be anti-social, he does not actually dislike other people. Instead, he is fiercely independent and wary of others who approach him with ulterior motives. He is not above helping people who are really in need, and he appears to have a soft spot for beginners -- for example, the twins Toya and Minori. In addition, he can be quite protective of people he cares for, a trait that Nyanta used to tease him about.
Shiroe sometimes views himself as acting out of pride or arrogance and can be self-conscious about enforcing his principles or beliefs on others. However, even if he knows that others might not appreciate his actions or thank him afterward, if he perceives he is acting for the greater good, he will use all means possible to achieve his goals. This has caused others to sometimes misunderstand his motives and has earned him the nickname Hara-guro Megane (腹ぐろ眼鏡), which is sometimes translated as "Black Heart Glasses." Typically, in Japanese manga, a character described as "haraguro" is one who appears to be nice but is in fact a schemer or a scoundrel. "Hara" is metaphorically one's true intentions, and "kuro" means black.(In the anime, he is referred to as the "villain in glasses").
Even as a child, he disliked playing outdoors and from middle school onward preferred to stay indoors where he used computers to explore virtual reality. Shiroe remained somewhat of a hikikomori through college, and he notes upon regaining consciousness in Aikiba that it's been awhile since he was last outside.

Shiroe is generally a loner and has reservations about guilds, due to unpleasant experiences with people who sought him out only to exploit his expertise in the game. He was, however, a member of the informal group of players collectively known as the Debauchery Tea Party and was its unofficial strategist and negotiator.
He became a well-known strategist due to his effort in researching and mastering his skill called Full Control Encounterwhich can be described in a short sentence as using 1% as a unit, forecast 30 seconds ahead. It means that he can grasp his allies remaining MP with 1% margin of error, know all remaining resources of both allies and enemies, and forecast battles 30 seconds ahead.
Akatsuki

Akatsuki is one of the players trapped in the MMORPG Elder Tale. She is a lvl 90 human Assassin whom later joins Shiroe and Naotsugu.
Akatsuki's original appearence in Elder Tales was a tall male Assassin with purple hair and eyes. His clothing consisted of a long-sleeved purple hooded shirt with dark purple cuffs and reinforced with armor on his shoulder and forehead areas, brown belted pants, knee-high boots with knee guards and a purple scarf tied around his neck.
Appearance
After obtaining an appearance changing potion from Shiroe, Akatsuki changed her gender and size to be similar to that of her real world stature. She is currently a petite female Assassin but with the same purple eyes and hair that she ties up in a ponytail. Her clothing is similar to her previous ones, albeit smaller in size. She now wears a sleeveless purple top, purple arm warmers, brown pants and purple boots.
Even in the real world, she was incredibly petite. She bemoans that even as a college student, people mistook her as a middle-school student and always used her as a cute mascot, something that she despises.

Personality

A petite black-haired beauty, Akatsuki possess a level of combat prowess that belies her small build. She is described as being too serious and carrying a somewhat sullen expression.  Akatsuki views herself as a ninja, or more specifically Shiroe's ninja (whom she addresses as her "Lord").  Her sub-class is Tracker.
She has real-life training in kendo, which neither Shiroe nor Naotsugu possess. Also, despite her 'loli' appearance, she is actually around Shiroe's age.
In her real life, her height is of a child; as a result, she is normally treated as such, making her be furious, even though she is an adult. The fact that she continued to be treated "like a mascot" frustrates her, especially by her younger sister. She is a hard worker who do things tirelessly, just to be recognised based on her competence. Nonetheless, her effort never got a proper recognition due to her cute appearance. That was the reason why she created her original character in Elder Tale to be a tall silent man until the Apocalypse causing troubles in her in-game daily life.

Akatsuki's New Avatar
Akatsuki's appearance after the potion
Akatsuki is one of the players trapped in the MMORPG Elder Tale. Realizing that her male avatar is going to be an inconvenience, she searches Shiroe, an Enchanter whom she had played with on numerous occasions before and an owner of an appearance changing potion. She finds him inAkihabara with a Guardian named Naotsugu and is invited to travel with them. Despite preferring to be alone, Akatsuki accepts the offer, saying that it is a way to repay her debt to Shiroe for without whom she would still be stuck in the body of a man.
The next day, the trio decides to explore the town and discovers that though they can eat and drink, all of the food taste the same and the drinks all taste like water. Shiroe is then called by Marielle, the guild master of Crescent Moon Alliance and the trio ventures to her guild to exchange information. They are informed that most guilds are recruiting members, believing that there is safety in numbers, and are invited to join the Alliance. However, they decline and leave.
The trio then decides to experiment and heads to the Archive Tower Forest, a map filled with monsters that attack on sight. They soon discover the difficulty of fighting the monsters but are able to adjust and overpower them.

An Invitation from Eastal

Akatsuki is present when Maryele throws a fit over going to the beach. After Shiroe finds a resolution, she is seen cowering from Henrietta inside Log Horizon's guild house, as the latter had prepared a summer dress for her to wear. When Serara talks to Nyanta, both she and Naotsugu listen intently for Serara's reaction.
When a messenger from Eastal arrives, however, and Shiroe is selected as one of the representatives to go to the Ancient Palace of Eternal Ice, Akatsuki decides to accompany him there. Much to both of their distaste, Henrietta tags along to "observe, "definitely not" to force Akatsuki into the aforementioned dress. Akatsuki ends up wearing said dress at the ball held by the Lander nobles, and shyly asks Shiroe if she looked strange.
Naotsugu

Naotsugu is Shiroe's friend and another player trapped in Elder Tale. He is a lighthearted warrior and an important part of Shiroe's team along with Akatsuki.  In the real world, his name is Naotsugu Hasegawa (葉瀬川直継), and he is 25 years old.
Naotsugu has short, grayish hair and a roguish smile. Unlike Shiroe, his height in the game (183cm or 6 feet) is approximately the same as his real life height.
Appearance
Before the apocalypse, his character had a diagonal slice cutting through one of his eyebrows, but after Naotsugu became trapped in the game, his features changed to mirror his real life face more closely, and the scar disappeared.

Personality

'The Warrior of Panties', Naotsugu is the cheerful big brother character of Shiroe's team, albeit one subjected to frequent physical abuse from Akatsuki.  A good, solid person and theDebauchery Tea Party's most reliable tank, Naotsugu's greatest fault is his incessant need to crack off-color jokes, especially those pertaining to women's underwear. Ironically, he's surprisingly shy when he's on the receiving end of such humor.
Naotsugu is a self-proclaimed "open-pervert" meaning that he freely talks about his perverted thoughts and is often proud of that fact. This often leads to Akatsuki hitting him out of irritation.
Naotsugu is two years older than Shiroe, and they first met four years before the apocalypse when Shiroe was already a veteran player.  They are close friends and have even met offline several times.[3] Due to his work schedule, he has been absent from Elder Tale two years and had the luck to be caught up in the mess on the very day he returned to the game.

Synopsis

The Apocalypse

For the first time in two years, Naotsugu logged into Elder Tale to test out the new expansion pack but became one of the 30,000 Japanese players trapped inside it. He is contacted by Shiroe, and they meet at a large tree in Akiba.
